LEE, WEE LEUNG. A RELIABILTY AND VALIDITY STUDY OF THE SELECTED LEVELS OF PSYCHOLOGICAL EXISTENCE SCALES, Dissertation for Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Psychology, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N.C., Chart on page 61.1, 1981.

[I have tried to compare the research of Dr. Abraham Maslow with the research data of Dr. Clare Graves. At sometime during the 1960’s Dr. Graves showed Dr. Maslow that the Hierarchy of Needs required some major reorganization due to Dr. Graves’ research data. Dr. Maslow changed the organization of the Hierarchy of Needs in his later work. It is not easy to make a comparison of Dr. Maslow’s earlier version of the Hierarchy of Needs or his later version with the research data of Dr. Graves. I have not included two needs in the comparison that Dr. Maslow included in his latest version– 1) Cognitive (needs for knowledge, understanding, novelty) and 2) Esthetic (needs for order, beauty). Perhaps both of these could be related most closely with 7-Flex-Flow and above?]

Credit must be given to the pioneering research of Dr. Maslow who influenced Dr. Graves in his research quest. These were two courageous pioneers who perceived similar patterns in their research which has led today to what Don Beck and Chris Cowan describe as Spiral Dynamics.
