XI. Results of Phase I:

1.   In all the runs through the data approximately 60% of the conceptions fell into two (2) categories with two (2) subtypes each.

A.  Deny Self or Sacrifice Self Category

a) deny self or sacrifice self for reward later

This kind of denial or sacrifice seemed to involve denying or sacrifice self in order to get some kind of reward later. One should work hard now to become something, deny yourself of a number of things in order to get into heaven or something of that nature. That kind of denial conception was present.

b) deny self or sacrifice self to get acceptance now

This kind of denial or sacrifice seemed to involve something like this (and it does sound a bit ridiculous): deny yourself from going to the movie that you want to see and go to the movie your friend wants to see in order that he will like you right now. It was this kind of thing.

There were these two deny/sacrifice self subtypes.

Then there were the two express self subtypes.

B.      Express Self

a) express self as self desires in a calculating fashion and at the expense of others

This kind of express self seemed to involve expressing yourself as you desire and in a calculating fashion  and at the expense of others . . . . but being careful along the way so that you didn’t offend the others or they may turn on you. This is the healthy person, a person who sucks as much as he can out of the other man but is  very careful not to go so far that the other man turns on him. (There were a number of conceptions of this  sort. Let me jump ahead and note a very interesting point, that this conception is the dominant conception of  the American people.)

b) express self as self desires but not at the expense of others

This conception is very outstanding and much more will be said about it later.

These were the four (4) basic subtypes that I had to start investigating in relation to:

1.   the study of classifications in relation to peer criticism – peer influence, changing under peer influence, either acting with peers, defending or modifying the conception.

                        2.   the study of classifications in relation to authority criticism.

3.   the study of the peer interaction data.
